Del Sol Medical Center Top Five Percent in Nation for Maternity Care Services

Del Sol Medical Center has received HealthGrades® Five Star Rating for Maternity Care Services for two years in a row (2009/2010- 2010/2011). This rating shows that Del Sol ranks in the top five percent in the nation for maternity care services.

For its 2010/2011 ratings, HealthGrades® independently analyzed the quality of maternity care for more than 1,500 hospitals across 19 states with a 1, 3 or 5-star rating based on four factors:

• Maternal complication rate among women undergoing single live-born vaginal or C-section deliveries
• Maternal complication rate among women undergoing “patient-choice” or non-clinically indicated C-sections
• Newborn volume adjusted for low birth weight
• Newborn mortality rate stratified into eight birth weight categories

The four criteria measured were weighted using predetermined weights based on consensus from a physician panel. Each factor’s percentile score was multiplied by its weight and then summed to create an overall score. Based upon each hospital’s overall score, HealthGrades® applied the following rating system:

Five-star (Best) = Top 15 percent of all hospitals within 19 states
Three-star (Average) = Middle 70 percent hospitals within 19 states
One-star (Poor) = Bottom 15 percent of all hospitals within 19 states

“Receiving this distinguished and well-respected award provides evidence that patients who come to Del Sol Medical Center for maternity services can receive outstanding care in their own community,” said Jacob Cintron, CEO.
